On the road again!

Just back from a month on the roads and trails of Scandinavia for my next Arctic 1000 expedition, and already so much has been happening in the past weeks! - for my greatest pleasure!

Early August, I was invited to give a presentation at the Mrcina Ranch in Bohinj, Slovenia as part of their summer evenings. An interested and friendly audience, the legendary Slovenian hospitality and superb hikes made it a weekend full of encounters and adventures!

Bohinj, two years after

I came in Slovenia back in 2017 during my Hidden Slovenia trip with Ola, Sparta, Nyx and Milwyn.  Robi and Nežka had welcomed my tribe in their ranch for more than a week or so. Bled and Bohinj  in the Triglav National Park, are two of the most beautiful areas in the country, with amazing landscapes, stunning scenery and mileage of hiking trails!

It is therefore with great pleasure that I accepted the proposal of Robi and my Slovenian friend Renata to give a presentation during the summer events organised at the ranch. Giving conferences abroad ... one of my dreams, and a first for the Mrcina Ranch which until then had only invited Slovenian speakers!

Adventure on the doorstep

You're probably not even surprised... But my little Slovenian break, initially meant to be a relaxing and refreshing week-end turned out to be far more active and intense than planned! Starting with the multiple delays of the airlines that earned me a night in a beautiful hotel in Frankfurt, all expenses paid (!) And a very belated arrival in Ljubjana.

Then, shortly after landing that Saturday, my Slovenian friends, always so motivated to take me on a new discovering tour of their country, embarked me for a nice climb on a local mountain. A beautiful hike! But clearly, the tone was given: it will not be the relaxing weekend imagined 😅 I'm probably not a right fit for that!

And the next day, on Sunday, after a great evening and short night in the straw, we set off again, for another superb yet demanding hike that took us on the ridges in the Triglav National Park. Splendid views, breathtaking scenery. What a fantastic day! With a ride back to the valley in Pinzgauer, improvised at the last minute by friends working in this area - just for fun! let me tell you, Life is really an Adventure!

The Fun of Outdoor Presentation

I gave my presentation on Saturday evening. Matjaž, who owns a print shop in Ljubjana, had printed the posters for me 😊. The ranch, which operates at full speed during the summer season, offers tours for tourists and locals, on their Icelandic horses and ponies. So we had a good chance to get some tourists in the audience that night ...

The only conference I had given outdoors was in Courmayeur in 2012 after the Alptrekking. And in Italian (!). But I loved it. That evening, in Bohjni, in the welcoming and natural setting of the ranch, with the horses in the background, I found myself again in this particular atmosphere of talking outdoors. The audience was there, despite the fact that the talk was in English - and contrary to our assumptions, it was 100% Slovenian! I had a blast sharing a bit of my life as an Adventurer - and to believe the feedback and participation of people, the fun was shared! The fact that in this part of Slovenia, locals have a very good knowledge of mountains and nature made it even more interesting. I have certainly learned as much - if not more! from them.

And like any decent evening in Slovenia, it ended well, and late at night 😉

A matter of passion

What I find most enriching in my travels and other adventures, are the meetings with other enthusiasts of all types, from all walks of life. Each time, it allows me to discover a small piece of another universe.

Robi, for example, is part of the Mountain Rescue Association in Triglav National Park. A volunteer-based organisation whose members train like pros, have a level of preparation worthy of mountain guides and are subject to many "on call" hours, on top of their daily jobs. But he speaks with such energy and conviction that his passion for this "hobby", as he says (!) is contagious. And the subject is truly exciting, especially for someone like me who loves adventure, nature and the mountains.😍

I also met the lovely Katja, an animal lover who runs a pet shop called Mica in the Studor hamlet. It was very interesting to have her point of view on animal products, particularly in terms of nutrition, the over-marketing of certain products, the current trends, and so on. On Sunday after my conference, she came at the ranch with a bag full of treats for Sparta, Milwyn and Nyx !! Really sweet, I tell you!

And to finish with my brief Slovenian trip, I had plenty of time to sate my passion for airports with multiple delays on return flights.😅 To this extent, it was so insanly ridiculous and unusual that I ended up finding it comical! And after all, it gave me all I needed to conclude this post!

Et c'est reparti!

A peine de retour d'un mois sur les routes et sentiers de Scandinavie en vue de ma prochaine expédition Arctic 1000, et les événements s'enchaînent - pour mon plus grand plaisir d'ailleurs!

Début août, j'ai été invitée à donner une présentation au Ranch Mrcina à Bohinj, Slovénie dans le cadre de leurs soirées estivales. Public intéressé et chaleureux, hospitalité slovène et superbes randonnées pour un week-end riches en rencontres et aventures!

Bohinj, deux ans après

Mon dernier voyage en Slovénie, Hidden Slovenia, remonte à 2017 où j'y avais passé un mois avec Sparta, Nyx, Ola et Milwyn. Robi et Nežka nous avaient accueillies et hébergées dans leur ranch pendant une dizaine de jours. La région de Bled et de Bohinj, au pied des Alpes Juliennes et du Triglav est une des plus belles du pays, avec des paysages grandioses et des kilomètres de sentiers!

C'est donc avec un immense plaisir que j'ai accepté la proposition de Robi et de mon amie slovène Renata de venir donner une présentation durant les soirées estivales organisées. Donner des conférences à l'étranger...un de mes rêves, et une première pour le Ranch Mrcina qui jusque là n'avait proposé que des conférenciers slovènes!

Week-end sous le signe de l'Aventure

J'imagine que cela ne vous étonne qu'à moitié... Mais ce petit week-end qui se devait d'être un break rafraîchissant a été plutôt été du type intense et sportif! A commencer par les retards multiples des compagnies aériennes qui m'ont valu une nuit dans un bel hôtel de Frankfort, tous frais payés (!) et une arrivée joliment décalée à Ljubjana.

Ensuite, à peine débarquée ce samedi-là, mes amis slovènes, toujours aussi motivés à me faire découvrir leur pays, m'ont embarqué sur une première jolie grimpette sur un sommet local. Juste magnifique. Mais clairement, le ton était donné: ce ne sera pas le week-end de détente imaginé 😅 Sûrement que je ne suis pas faite pour ça!

Et le lendemain, dimanche, après une superbe soirée et courte nuit dans la paille, on remettait ça, pour un superbe et exigeant tour qui nous a amené sur les crêtes dans le Parc National du Triglav. Vues splendides, paysages à couper le souffle. Juste grandiose! Avec un retour en Pinzgauer, improvisé à la dernière minute par des amis travaillant dans cette zone - just for fun! Je vous dis, la Vie est une vraie Aventure!

Conférence en mode outdoor

Le samedi soir a eu lieu ma présentation. Matjaž, qui a une entreprise d'impression, s'était chargé d'imprimer mes affiches 😊. Le ranch qui fonctionne a plein régime durant la saison estivale, propose des tours pour touristes et locaux, sur leurs chevaux et poneys islandais. Donc la chance d'avoir quelques touristes dans le public ce soir-là...

La seule conférence que j'avais donnée en plein air était à Courmayeur en 2012 suite à l'Alptrekking. Et en italien (!). Mais j'avais adoré. Ce soir-là, à Bohjni, dans le cadre accueillant et si nature du ranch, avec les chevaux en arrière-plan, je me suis à nouveau retrouvée dans cette ambiance si particulière de parler en extérieur. Le public était au rendez-vous, malgré le fait que la conférence soit en anglais - et contrairement à nos suppositions, il était à 100% slovénien! J'ai eu un plaisir fou à partager un peu de ma vie d'aventurière - et à en croire le retour et la participation des gens, le plaisir a été partagé! C'était d'autant plus intéressant que, dans cette région de Slovénie, les locaux connaissent très bien la montagne et j'en ai certainement appris tout autant - voire plus! de leur part.

Et comme toute soirée en Slovénie digne de ce nom, elle s'est bien terminée, et tard dans la nuit 😉

Question de passions

Ce que je trouve le plus enrichissant dans mes voyages et autres aventures, ce sont les rencontres avec d'autres passionnés de tous types, de tous horizons. A chaque fois, cela me permet de découvrir un petit bout d'un autre univers.
Robi, par exemple, fait partie de la colonne de secours dans le Parc national du Triglav. Une organisation entièrement bénèvole dont les membres s'entraînent comme des pros, ont un niveau de préparation digne des guides de montagne et sont soumis à de nombreuses heures de piquet, en dehors de leurs heures de travail "classique". Mais il en parle avec une telle énergie et conviction que sa passion pour ce "hobby", comme il le dit (!) est contagieuse. Et le sujet est passionnant, d'autant plus pour quelqu'un qui aime la nature, l'aventure et la montagne. 😍

J'ai aussi rencontré l'adorable Katja, une passionnée d'animaux et qui tient une boutique pour animaux Mica dans le hameau de Studor. C'était très intéressant d'avoir son point de vue sur les produits pour animaux, notamment en matière de nutrition, la commercialisation à outrance de certains produits, les tendances du moment, etc. Le dimanche après ma conférence, elle a débarqué au ranch avec un sac plein de cadeaux pour Sparta, Milwyn et Nyx!! Vraiment chou, je vous dis!

Et pour terminer ma brève excursion slovène, j'ai eu le temps d'assouvir ma passion pour les aéroports avec encore de multiples retards sur les vols retour. 😅 A ce point-là, c'était tellement hallucinant et inhabituel que j'ai fini par trouver cela comique! Après tout, cela me donnait de la matière pour conclure ce post!

Histoire de prendre la vie du bon côté 😉
